Observe little Trotty Wagtail as he gently waddles around look ing for the odd worm and join the fox on his dramatic bid to outrace the h ounds. Reflect on the timelessness of old Father Thames who reaches from a ge to age and outlives us all. And find out what is even worse than all th e vices and evils of the backstreets of 17th-century London!
\n\nJames recentl y returned to the Wigmore Hall to begin his project with Anna Tilbrook\, S chumann and the English Romantics\, pairing Schumann song cycles with new commissions from leading composers\, Sally Beamish\, Julian Philips and Jo nathan Dove\, setting English poetry of the Romantic period.

Baritone Marcus Farnsworth\, recorder player Ian Wilson and guitarist Mark Eden perform Stephen Dodgson’s Riley & Co at the < a href='https://www.southwellmusicfestival.com/southwell-music-festival-20 21-whats-on/'>Southwell Music Festival in a recital which pairs the se t with Manuel de Falla’s Seven Spanish Songs (also with soprano A lison Rose and tenor Andrew Tortoise). Two performances of the same recita l will take place on 26th and 26th August.
\nDodgson’s cycle of song s\, based on poems by Charles Causley\, first presents two characters\, th e rustic Riley in his carefree life living out in wild nature and the no l ess rough-and-ready lad Timothy Winters. We then experience the potentiall y lethal Filippino Bamboo Dance which contrasts the romance of th e young couple with the potential danger of putting a foot wrong\, the sna ps of the bamboo portrayed by sharp taps on the wood of the guitar. The fi nal song depicts the thoughts of Saint Roche’s dog\, who helped his master recover from the plague only to have to endure being banned from their qu iet house while it is invaded by those looking for a miracle cures. He rou nds the cycle off with an indignant ‘Bow-wow!’

As part of the Barnes Music Festival (this year celebrating its 10th
anniversary)\, pianist Osman Tack performs a lunchtime recital of Stephen
Dodgson’s Six Bagatelles: Set 2 (their first public performance – they w
ere originally written for Bernard Roberts\, who had recorded multiple Dod
gson works but sadly became too ill to play them) alongside Chopin’s 24 Pr
eludes Op. 28. Dodgson’s intriguing bagatelles use combinations of words a
nd music to paint vivid and distinct pictures. With roots in Bach’s Well-T
empered Klavier as well as the Spanish and African influences of Majorca\,
Chopin’s Preludes take us on a gothic journey of life and death.

This Barnes Music Festival concert centres around ‘A Beautiful Object’: the harpsichord\, with a new work of that same name by a rising figure on the contemporary music scene \, composer Héloïse Werner. Auspiciously absent at the start\, the harpsic hord is introduced with music of its main era\, in an arrangement that lin ks its celebrated past to the present. With Héloïse’s piece\, then follows an exciting journey of discoveries. Stephen Dodgson’s Sonata has beautifu l serenade-like character\, with its last movement a nod to the harpsichor d’s illustrious past\, guiding us back in time again to one of the Unmeasu red Preludes by French Baroque composer Élisabeth Claude Jacquet de La Gue rre. The evening finishes with one of the most famous contemporary harpsic hord concertos to date.

\nWhat is there in the waters of Barnes that holds such an attraction for artists and music makers? Sin ce George Frideric Handel’s sojourn at Barn Elms in 1713\, a succession of leading composers have made the village their home. From Gustav Holst and Herbert Howells to Howard Goodall and Roxanna Panufnik\, they have raised children and written music to the accompaniment of the birds on the Commo n\, and the ebb and flow of the tidal Thames. So have they found inspirati on in this greenest of London villages? Or is it mere coincidence that has turned a corner of South West London into a creative hub?
\nIn her book Composers of Barnes BBC broadcaster Eleanor Oldroyd has put together informative and often affectionate biographical profiles of eight leading Barnes composers. This new edit ion marks the anniversaries of birth of Gustav Holst in 1874 and Stephen D odgson in 1924 with new information and new stories about the lives and co mpositions of all the Composers of Barnes.
\nAt this launch event\, Elly Oldroyd talks about the stories she has discovered\, interviews some of the composers and plays the music of the composers\, past and present.< /p>\n

They write of the concert: Vaughan Williams’ quintet for strings was writ
ten shortly after his famous Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis
\, and similarly takes medieval music as its starting point\, creating a t
imeless spaciousness. With its warm texture featuring two violas there is
an almost orchestral expansiveness to this nostalgic music. We mark Stephe
