Tenor James Gilchrist and guitarist Mark Eden perform Stephen Dodgson’s Four Poems of John Clare and London Lyrics in an evening recital as part of the Dillington Guitar Festival. Observe little Trotty Wagtail as he gently waddles around looking for the odd worm and join the fox on his dramatic bid to outrace the hounds. Reflect on the timelessness of old Father Thames who reaches from age to age and outlives us all. And find out what is even worse than all the vices and evils of the backstreets of 17th-century London!
James recently returned to the Wigmore Hall to begin his project with Anna Tilbrook, Schumann and the English Romantics, pairing Schumann song cycles with new commissions from leading composers, Sally Beamish, Julian Philips and Jonathan Dove, setting English poetry of the Romantic period.
Mark Eden is better known as one half of the Eden Stell Guitar Duo and is also a founder member of the VIDA Guitar Quartet. Both ensembles have achieved international acclaim and continue to perform at some of the most prestigious venues, International guitar and music festivals all over the world.

Baritone Marcus Farnsworth, recorder player Ian Wilson and guitarist Mark Eden perform Stephen Dodgson’s Riley & Co at the Southwell Music Festival in a recital which pairs the set with Manuel de Falla’s Seven Spanish Songs (also with soprano Alison Rose and tenor Andrew Tortoise). Two performances of the same recital will take place on 26th and 26th August.
Dodgson’s cycle of songs, based on poems by Charles Causley, first presents two characters, the rustic Riley in his carefree life living out in wild nature and the no less rough-and-ready lad Timothy Winters. We then experience the potentially lethal Filippino Bamboo Dance which contrasts the romance of the young couple with the potential danger of putting a foot wrong, the snaps of the bamboo portrayed by sharp taps on the wood of the guitar. The final song depicts the thoughts of Saint Roche’s dog, who helped his master recover from the plague only to have to endure being banned from their quiet house while it is invaded by those looking for a miracle cures. He rounds the cycle off with an indignant ‘Bow-wow!’

As part of the Barnes Music Festival (this year celebrating its 10th anniversary), pianist Osman Tack performs a lunchtime recital of Stephen Dodgson’s Six Bagatelles: Set 2 (their first public performance – they were originally written for Bernard Roberts, who had recorded multiple Dodgson works but sadly became too ill to play them) alongside Chopin’s 24 Preludes Op. 28. Dodgson’s intriguing bagatelles use combinations of words and music to paint vivid and distinct pictures. With roots in Bach’s Well-Tempered Klavier as well as the Spanish and African influences of Majorca, Chopin’s Preludes take us on a gothic journey of life and death.
Osman is studying for a Master’s at the Royal College of Music with Sofya Gulyak and Danny Driver, having recently completed a PhD at the University of Oxford. He has a love for teaching and collaborating with singers, instrumentalists, composers and dancers.

As part of the Barnes Music Festival (celebrating its 10th anniversary this year) the critically acclaimed and award-winning Mithras Trio present a colourful programme of works exploring dialogues between different cultures, styles and periods on 17th March which is also the composer’s birthday. In Dodgson’s second trio, the return to an earlier canonic style opens up vistas of conversational potential, as well as a dialogue with the past, shared by Brahms, whose first trio is a revision of an early work. Eröd’s sparkling first trio is a fusion of styles, from Hungarian Folk to impressionistic harmony and a strong jazz element.

The critically acclaimed, award-winning Mithras Trio present a colourful pair of works: Stephen Dodgson’s second trio and Brahms’s first trio as part of the Lunchtime Concert series at St George’s Bristol.
Praised for their ‘exquisite phrasing’, ‘full-blooded commitment’ and ‘bold, passionate colours’, the Mithras Trio is fast growing a reputation as one of the next generation’s most exciting piano trios. They are current members of the BBC New Generation Artists scheme, broadcasting regularly on BBC Radio 3, and they won first prize at the prestigious 10th Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition.
This concert’s first piece is the one-movement second trio by Stephen Dodgson, rich and complex, by turns playful, exuberant and rhapsodic. The second piece is one of the great masterpieces of the piano trio repertoire, lyrical and soaring in the first movement, impish and skittish in the scherzo, celestially calm in the adagio, and finishing with a dark and brooding fourth movement.

Rory McLeery’s vocal ensemble performs a rich and varied programme of renaissance and contemporary works to reflect on Mary, who has been celebrated and venerated in Catholic motets and antiphons since the Middle Ages at the North Norfolk Music Festival. The highly distinguished vocal ensemble presents a programme of music by Ludford, Tallis, Parsons, Byrd, Britten, Panufnik, Dodgson, Weir and McDowall.
Works range from the simple lullaby Dormi Jesu by Stephen Dodgson, miraculous cascades of sound by Tallis, Britten’s Hymn to the Virgin, Roxana Panufnik’s complex and emotional Magnificat and Judith Weir’s ebullient Ave Regina Caelorum.
Pre-pandemic, the group both recorded and toured the exquisite Dormi Jesu as part of their ‘Queen of Heaven’ programme.
Taking its name from the Blessed Virgin Mary, a focus of religious devotion in the sacred music of all ages, the Marian Consort is a young, dynamic and internationally-renowned early music vocal ensemble. This ‘astounding’ (The Herald) ensemble has given concerts throughout the UK and Europe, features regularly on BBC Radio 3, and is a former ‘Young Artist’ of The Brighton Early Music Festival. Tonight’s programme, features settings by English Renaissance composers Robert Fayrfax, Walter Lambe and John Taverner juxtaposed with contemporary Marian works by Cecilia McDowall, Bedford-based Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Judith Weir, Roxanna Panufnik, Matthew Martin and Hilary Campbell.

Written for lower voices, it was originally commissioned and recorded by the King’s Singers.
Summa Musica directed by Anthony Maydwell was formed in 1995 to present the first performances in modern times of significant unaccompanied choral repertoire chiefly from the Late Renaissance, particularly the music of Holy Week. In addition it has presented many Australian premieres of works from all periods including Gesualdo, Naji Hakim, Haydn, Ben Holten, Lotti, Rachmaninoff, Einojuhani Rautavaara and Richard Strauss, Utendal, Victoria to name but a few. Most recently the choir has commenced an ongoing series of concerts of reconstructed Bolivian Baroque repertoire. The choir has broadcast and recorded for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
(The concert is being performed twice, at 4pm and 6pm.)

Shining new light on an old treasure. This Barnes Music Festival concert centres around ‘A Beautiful Object’: the harpsichord, with a new work of that same name by a rising figure on the contemporary music scene, composer Héloïse Werner. Auspiciously absent at the start, the harpsichord is introduced with music of its main era, in an arrangement that links its celebrated past to the present. With Héloïse’s piece, then follows an exciting journey of discoveries. Stephen Dodgson’s Sonata has beautiful serenade-like character, with its last movement a nod to the harpsichord’s illustrious past, guiding us back in time again to one of the Unmeasured Preludes by French Baroque composer Élisabeth Claude Jacquet de La Guerre. The evening finishes with one of the most famous contemporary harpsichord concertos to date.
Bach Club is a concert curator, boutique label and home to Bach Club Soloists, an ensemble focusing on period instruments, new commissions, and remarkable collaborations. Bach Club founder and director Pawel Siwczak, is a Polish & British musician with a passion for historical keyboards, putting emphasis on the storytelling power of the language of music; the sheer ability to communicate expressively with the audience is key to him.
Programme

Book launch with Eleanor Oldroyd with music by Handel, Holst, Howells, Dodgson, Davis, Parker, Goodall and Panufnik
What is there in the waters of Barnes that holds such an attraction for artists and music makers? Since George Frideric Handel’s sojourn at Barn Elms in 1713, a succession of leading composers have made the village their home. From Gustav Holst and Herbert Howells to Howard Goodall and Roxanna Panufnik, they have raised children and written music to the accompaniment of the birds on the Common, and the ebb and flow of the tidal Thames. So have they found inspiration in this greenest of London villages? Or is it mere coincidence that has turned a corner of South West London into a creative hub?
In her book Composers of Barnes BBC broadcaster Eleanor Oldroyd has put together informative and often affectionate biographical profiles of eight leading Barnes composers. This new edition marks the anniversaries of birth of Gustav Holst in 1874 and Stephen Dodgson in 1924 with new information and new stories about the lives and compositions of all the Composers of Barnes.
At this launch event, Elly Oldroyd talks about the stories she has discovered, interviews some of the composers and plays the music of the composers, past and present.
Tickets available via the Barnes Music Festival website.

Jack Hancher performs a number of Stephen Dodgson Etudes alongside works by Jose, Debussy, Mompou and Albeniz in his Barnes Music Festival lunchtime guitar recital.
Described by Gendai Guitar Magazine as a “poet and a painter, colouring sounds out of the guitar as if his imagination and the guitar were one”, Hancher made his Wigmore Hall debut in 2018 and won the prestigious Gold Medal of the Royal Overseas League Competition in 2022, becoming just the third guitarist to do so.
Stephen Dodgson, although a prolific composer across everything from large-scale orchestral works to choirs and chamber ensembles, became particularly known and valued for his compositions for guitar including a number of partitas and studies, alongside two concertos and several works for massed guitars. And this solo guitar recital invites us into an intimate space with the most intimate of instruments.

This celebratory concert brings together works from many of the composers who have lived and worked in Barnes. Stephen Dodgson’s 100th anniversary is celebrated with his Trumpet Concerto – his last work, written in 2011 – and the trumpeter he wrote it for, Imogen Whitehead. (For more, read Imogen’s blog about the concerto.) The performance also celebrates Holst’s 150th anniversary The Planets. Jim Parker and Carl Davis both sadly died last year and their lives are marked by the popular pieces they wrote respectively for Midsomer Murders and Pride & Prejudice. And Howard Goodall and Roxanna Panufnik bring some of their latest works to the concert platform.

They write of the concert: Vaughan Williams’ quintet for strings was written shortly after his famous Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, and similarly takes medieval music as its starting point, creating a timeless spaciousness. With its warm texture featuring two violas there is an almost orchestral expansiveness to this nostalgic music. We mark Stephen Dodgson’s centenary year with Countdown – a jovial and lyrical suite for oboe and harp written in honour of the late Queen Mother’s 90th birthday: each movement counts something different, from candles to sheep to blessings! Reflective contemporary works by Ayanna Witter-Johnson and James MacMillan are offset against the frothy energy of Mozart’s much-loved oboe quartet.

Witter-Johnson: Meditation
Dodgson: Countdown
MacMillan: Memento
Vaughan Williams: Phantasy Quintet
